Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd was incorporated in the year 1945 and later converted into a public sector in the year 1955. The company their production in Jeeps and other diesel-operated engines from Mumbai. Formerly called, Mahindra Van Wijk & Visser Ltd. They got their name changed in 1970 to Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.
The company headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India and they started their operation from Ludhiana.
Mahindra & Mahindra was initially set up as a steel trading company in 1945 in Ludhiana as Mahindra & Mohammed by brothers K.C Mahindra and J.C Mahindra and Malik Ghulam Mohammed. Mohammed migrated to Pakistan after the independence and there he became the first finance minister of Pakistan.
Then the Group entered auto manufacturing to bring in the iconic Willy’s Jeep (under license) onto Indian roads. The founders, K.C. and J.C. Mahindra believed that the introduction of new modes of transportation can aid India’s prosperity growth. Eventually, becoming one of their first goals was to build durable, rugged vehicles owing to their ability to handle the rough Indian terrain.

Keshub Mahindra,
Chairman Emeritus of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, is a graduate of Wharton, University of Pennsylvania, USA. Keshub joined Mahindra in 1947, later he became the Chairman in 1963. Of course, he is a well-known benefactor who has redefined good corporate governance in India. Moreover, he has been appointed by the Government of India to serve on many committees including the Sachar Commission on Company Law & MRTP and the Central Advisory Council of Industries.

Mahindra and Mahindra started with the manufacturing of Jeep-type vehicles, petrol industrial engines, industrial process control instruments, and flow meters. Later, traded in steel and manufactured professional-grade electronic components. At the same time, Jeeps, are manufactured under a license and an agreement with Willy’s Motors Inc., Toledo, Ohio, U.S.A.
Further to them the Company also acts as an exclusive distributor for the whole of India for their entire range of vehicles. To enumerate, utility vans, cargo/personnel carriers, and pick-up trucks.
In the year 1991, to meet the changing needs of the market, the Company introduced a new model 225 DI (25HP) tractor. Eventually, in the year 1993, the Automotive division undertook to introduce a wide range of products such as minibus, MM Deluxe, Armada deluxe, Cabling pick-up, CL-Classic & a single/double Cab pick-up, etc.
During the year 1994, a new Company Mahindra USA Inc had been established in Texas, U.S.A. with the objective of increasing tractor sales in the U.S. In the same way, the company has a presence in countries like Australia, Europe, Latin America, Malaysia, South Korea, and South Africa.
In addition, The Mahindra & Mahindra group and the TVS group have floated a joint venture to provide software solutions to the automobile sector. For the most part, all the channel financing agreements are made by the company through CitiBank. Coupled with French car company Renault an agreement to arrange the facility of Renault diesel engines in Mahindra Scorpio.
